Abstract

GRIP is an innovative robotic hand exoskeleton that supports the weakened hand function of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) or cerebral vascular accident (CVA). The GRIP exoskeleton supports the lateral pinch grip. This frequently used grasp allows patients to complete a wide variety of tasks, including picking up and manipulating objects of different sizes and weights. To support the lateral pinch grip and release of the object, the GRIP system actuates the thumb movement. Previously, we demonstrated our innovative technology and validated the technological aspects of the GRIP exoskeleton. Within this DIH-HERO project, the aim is to further develop the mechanical and electronic design of the hand exoskeleton to significantly improve the technological maturity, and to evaluate the performance of the device with SCI and CVA patients within a relevant environment. Improving hand function can highly impact the self-management of patients, and ultimately their quality of life. To reduce healthcare costs and increase independence, the assistive robotic technology of the GRIP system can be used by patients without help from caregivers.
