Caregiving activities from innovation activities

Description

Instituto de Robótica para la Dependencia (Robotics Institute for Dependency) is a non-profit private foundation in Sitges, Spain. It was created in 2014 by Fundació Ave Maria (Ave Maria Foundation) to separate caregiving activities from innovation activities, after 30 years of experience, to specialize the institute and make it an international reference. The aim of the Institute is to improve quality of life among people with disabilities, their families and the care professionals providing them support, through the use of the most advanced technologies, obtaining innovative products that transform the way things are done today, transferring our knowledge, working efficiently, with quality, safety and sustainability. To that end, IRD has collaborates with the industry associations in Spain to collect and prioritize the needs of the dependency sector and also to start the projects that will provide solutions to most relevant needs.

Typical users: Relevant Experience Research on Emotion Recognition and Adaptation: The IRD has ongoing research through a PhD student and collaboration with several institutions including Universitat Rovira Virgili, technological center Eurecat and SEM Braingaze. Work has been done in the evaluation of different wearable devices for the measurement of biosignals, like Muse and Emotiv for EEG or Shimmer for Galvanic Skin Response. Experiments eliciting emotions to people with ID have been done and a labeled dataset of video and biosignals has been created to enable current research. Ethics committee is in place to authorize experiments with humans. Robot and Application Development: IRD has implemented 15 cognitive stimulation activities designed by FAM for the social robot Nao. This activities are being used daily at FAM, and improvements are in progress. IRD has developed the FollowMe robot, which automates several electric wheelchairs to make them automatically follow a leader, who guides all wheelchairs through an outdoor run. Business Model Development: The first product developed and commercialized by the IRD is an IoT solution that adapts all job positions to people with light and mild ID, simultaneously improving quality of service through the nearly complete elimination of errors in the classification and delivery of personal clothes. For this product, all aspects of the business model (value propositions, customer segments, channels, revenue streams, etc. has been defined and validated. Technical Support to Pilots: IRD has already managed a 3 week pilot evaluation of the GoCart robotic transport solution from the South Korean company Yujin Robot, in which 5 employees including engineering and business development staff were hosted and supported through testing, design of accessories and adaptation of business processes and the visit from and to potential customers and relevant representatives from government and industry associations.
